Members dress in traditional red cassocks, with the junior choristers wearing ruffs and musical achievement badges. The choir consists of boys and girls aged from 6 years through to adults (trebles, sopranos, altos, tenors and basses).
We practise weekly and provide musical excellence and a warm fellowship for a varied group of choristers who revel in the opportunity to sing beautiful music together. We are a predominately young group, full of enthusiasm, who enjoy sharing our love of music with the wider community. Being a chorister not only teaches musicianship it also builds discipline, teamwork and confidence.
If you, or your child, are interested in becoming involved, please contact Karen Knudson for an audition.
Service and Performance Schedules
Throughout the primary school terms both choirs sing at the Sunday 10am service. On special occasions the full choir sings at the 7pm service. Knox Church celebrates a monthly communion service on the last Sunday of each month. The choir performs a communion or mass setting at this service, drawing from a wide range of styles including English communion settings and classical masses.
The choir sings at additional services including Ash Wednesday, Easter, Christmas Eve, special concerts, funerals and weddings. The choir also takes part in civic occasions such as the Mayor’s Carols, Anzac Day commemorations and Hospice Memorial Services.
From time to time the choir sings substantial choral works with orchestral accompaniment. These have included Handel’s ‘Messiah’, Faure’s ‘Requiem’, Haydn’s ‘Nelson Mass’, Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria in D’, Mozart’s ‘Requiem’, Mendelssohn’s ‘Elijah’ and Karl Jenkins’ ‘The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace’.
As well as singing at Knox Church the choir has also performed in such diverse venues as hospital wards, shopping malls, the Botanical Gardens, the Public Art Gallery and the Octagon, and has recorded on a number of occasions for TVNZ, Radio NZ and BBC Scotland.
Rehearsals are held every Wednesday, during primary school terms
5:15pm – 6:30pm for junior choristers, and
6pm – 8pm for the adult choir
The Knox Church Choir offers singing and organ playing scholarships, which are awarded annually to younger choristers enabling them to receive additional tuition. The choir provides exposure for children to some of the most beautiful and enduring music in the Church’s tradition, and offers the opportunity to sing with other talented musicians and to learn from them.
Some of New Zealand’s leading soloists and musicians were given early training in the Knox Church Choir with ex-members including soloist Roger Wilson and conductors Dr Karen Grylls and Peter de Blois.
Karen Knudsen is the nationally renowned and award-winning Organist and Choir Director of Knox Church. Born in Dunedin, she graduated MusB(Hons) from the University of Otago and is a past winner of the Nelson Emergent Composers and Otago/Southland Anthem Competitions. Karen also conducts the Otago Girls’ High School Choir and the Otago Boys’ High School Choir and has toured internationally with them.
